Spoofing Fraud

Calls, texts, and emails faked to look like they come from your bank or a trusted organisation.

Spoofing Fraud
What it is

Spoofing Fraud

Spoofing is a technique that allows a fraudster to disguise a call, text message, or email so that it appears to come from a genuine source, such as your bank, a government department, or a company you already deal with. Because caller identification and message threads can be manipulated to display a familiar name or number, the deception is often extremely convincing, even to cautious and experienced people.

Criminals typically use spoofed contact to create urgency, claiming that an account has been compromised and that funds must be moved immediately to a supposedly safe location, or that a one time security code must be shared to stop an ongoing fraud. A spoofed text message will sometimes appear within the same conversation thread as genuine messages from the organisation being impersonated. Warning signs include unexpected contact demanding immediate action, requests for a security code or password, instructions not to call the organisation back on its official number, and any suggestion that secrecy is necessary to protect your money.

How Duarte & Finch helps

Investigation, tracing, and full legal representation

Our investigators preserve and analyse call records, message threads, and related technical evidence to establish that spoofing occurred and to identify the pattern of deception used against you. This evidence underpins both a claim against any institution that failed to protect you and, where the perpetrators can be identified, a criminal referral.

Because spoofing operations are frequently run by organised groups working across several countries, we coordinate with Interpol and national law enforcement agencies to support the investigation and pursuit of those responsible. Our lawyers file the case, handle every stage of the claim or proceedings, and represent you through to resolution.
